Identifying Your Child's Sportsgear

How do you identify your child's gear, especially their baseballs, soccer balls or footballs? Do you write their full name? Their first name?

A stranger is often closer to gaining the confidence of a child if they know that child's first name. And they can get if very easily if they can read it off the ball the child is carrying or is retrieving from the woods where it was kicked.

Don't give a stanger an unfair advantage of gaining the confidence of your child. Put his/her initials instead of a full or partial name.

Got Extra Water?

One of the first things you learn as a coach is that no matter what the sport- soccor in the fall or baseball in the spring/summer - children can dehydrate very quickly. Give them frequent water breaks. It also gives them a chance to catch their breath: do you know child that will stop for a second because he/she is tired? They just want to go go go.

But occasionally a member of the team would show up without a bottle of water. So I've developed a habit, whether I'm coaching or not, of throwing an extra couple of bottles of water in my sports knapsack and handing them out to kids who forgot to bring one from home. both kids and parents who forget really appreciate it.

Happy Memorial Day

So many accidents can happen on a holiday. People are rushing to parties, some may have had too much alchohol so they’re risks to everyone, including themselves, pools a being opened and water safety and potential risks may have been forgotten from last year, and although barbecue is delicious no matter what you cook, you’re working with fire which exposes children and adults to even more hazards.

Have a great time this weekend but be careful. And watch out for the children.
